Knowledge of screwdrivers

Date:2023/10/11

A screwdriver is one of the essential tools for every household, specifically used to tighten screws and is widely used. A screwdriver can be considered a simple tool in handicrafts, with a blade and a handle, but its invention has epoch-making significance. In the 3rd century AD, Greek mathematician Archimedes invented the thread, but it was not until the 15th century that the first screw appeared. In 1550, there was a wooden screw, and in 1780, in London, the true meaning of a screwdriver appeared. Carpenters discovered that using a screwdriver to tighten a screw was more effective in fixing things than using a hammer to strike them. As for the inventor, it should be a carpenter in the society at that time. In China, there are different names for screwdrivers in different regions. The dialects of Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Shandong, Shanxi, and Henan, as well as Shaanxi and northern Shaanxi, are called "screwdriver". Jiangxi, Anhui, Hubei, Shaanxi and other places are called "screwdriver". The central and western regions are called "screwdriver", and the Yangtze River Delta region is called "rotary chisel".

With the development, there have been many styles and specifications of screwdrivers. Below, we will classify and introduce them to you. The style of a screwdriver is generally divided based on the shape of the blade.

Cross screwdriver

A cross shaped screwdriver is a common style, with a blade groove resembling a cross. The cross screw and cross screwdriver were invented by Henry Phillips in the 1930s and were first used on automobile assembly lines. The English word is Phillips Screwdriver.

Cross screwdriver generally has 7 specifications from small to large, PH000, PH00, PH0, PH1, PH2, PH3, and PH4, which represent the cross slot numbers of the screwdriver head. Also use slot number × Represented by the length of the blade, PH0 × 100MM indicates that the cross slot number is PH0, and the length of the tool bar is 100mm.

The corresponding tool bar diameters for PH000 to PH4 are 1.5mm, 2mm, 3mm, 4.5 or 5mm, 6mm, 8mm, and 10mm, respectively. The length of the blade generally includes 60mm, 75mm, 80mm, 100mm, 150mm, 200mm, 250mm, 300mm, etc.

Slotted screwdriver

The straight line type is also a very common screwdriver in daily life, with a blade like a straight line. English is Slotted Screwdriver.

The specifications of a straight screwdriver are generally the width of the blade head × Tool bar length representation, for example: 3 × The width of the tool holder head is 3MM, and the overall length of the tool holder is 75MM. But the entire length of the screwdriver is not 75MM, as 75MM does not include the length of the handle.

Another specification representation method is that SL represents a single character, followed by a number indicating the width of the tool holder, such as SL1.5, SL1.7, SL2.5, SL3, etc. The blade width generally includes 1.5mm, 1.7mm, 2.5mm, 3mm, 4.5mm, 5mm, 5.5mm, 6mm, 7mm, 8mm, etc.

The length of the blade produced by a straight screwdriver is generally the same as that of a cross, as mentioned earlier.

Hexagon socket screwdriver

The head of an internal hexagonal screwdriver is a hexagonal shape, which is the same as the head shape of an internal hexagonal wrench. The concave shape of the screw head used for disassembly is also a hexagonal shape, called an internal hexagonal screw.

The English name for an internal hexagonal screwdriver is "Hexagon Screwdriver", so the specifications of an internal hexagonal screwdriver are generally expressed in H+the length of the opposite side, in millimeters. Common specifications include H1, H1.5, H2, H2.5, H3, H4, H5, H6, etc. The internal hexagonal screwdriver also has an upgraded version of ball head hexagonal, which can adapt to more working conditions.

Rice shaped screwdriver

The blade shape of a rice shaped screwdriver is like a rice shaped character, which is commonly referred to as Pozidriv Screwdriver in English. The specifications are usually represented by PZ numbers, and commonly used specifications include PZ0, PZ1, PZ2, PZ3, etc. The rice shaped screwdriver is an upgraded version of a cross shaped screwdriver, which can withstand greater torque and is not easy to slip. The diameter of the tool holder corresponding to PZ0-PZ3 is the same as the cross, which is 3mm, 4.5 or 5mm, 6mm, and 8mm, respectively.

Star screwdriver

A plum blossom screwdriver is not as common as a cross and a letter, but it is also used in many places. The notch of the blade is like a star, also known as a star, as shown in the following figure.

The plum blossom screwdriver is also divided into two types: those with holes in the middle and those without holes in the middle. The English name for a torx screwdriver is' Torx Screwdriver '.

The specifications of a plum blossom screwdriver are generally represented by the diagonal length, usually represented by T+numbers. Common standards include the following specifications. T1, T2, T3, T4, T5, T6, T7, T8, T9, T10, T15, T20, T25, T27, T30, T40, T45, T50, T55, T60, T70, T80, T90, T100, etc

Y-shaped screwdriver

The notch shape of the Y-shaped screwdriver's blade is like a letter Y, used to remove screws with a Y-shaped notch. The specifications of a Y-shaped screwdriver are generally represented by the diameter of the blade, usually with a Y before the number. Common specifications include Y1, Y2, Y3, Y4, Y5, Y6, etc.

Square screwdriver

The blade shape of a square screwdriver is a quadrilateral shape, used to remove screws with a quadrilateral notch. In English, it is Square Screwdriver. The specifications of a square screwdriver are generally represented by the distance between the opposite sides, preceded by the letter S. Common specifications include S2, S2.5, S3, S3.5, S4, etc.

Triangle screwdriver

The shape of the triangular screwdriver head is a triangle, and triangular screwdrivers are generally represented by the height of the blade triangle, commonly available in specifications such as 1.8, 2, 2.3, 2.6, 2.7, and 3. Triangle screwdrivers are rarely used.

U-shaped screwdriver

The blade of a U-shaped screwdriver has two protruding ports, similar to the letter U, and its specifications are generally represented by the spacing between the two protruding ports. Common specifications include U1.7, U2.0, U2.3, U2.6, etc. U-shaped screwdrivers are not commonly used, and are more common on bull sockets.

Five pointed star screwdriver

The five pointed star screwdriver bit is a five pointed star shape commonly used on Apple phone screws, with common specifications of 0.8, 1.2, 1.6, 2, etc.

Internal cross screwdriver

Compared to regular Phillips screwdrivers, the cross of the blade is recessed and is rarely used. Only the specification with a blade diameter of 5mm is commonly used.

Trident screwdriver

This type of screwdriver has an extra fork compared to a U-shaped screwdriver and is very infrequent in use. It can be used on the new bull socket.

In addition to the styles of these screwdrivers mentioned above, there are also various styles of screwdriver heads. For any shape of screw, there are corresponding shapes of screwdrivers. Except for the cross and letter, the others are collectively referred to as irregular screwdrivers due to their limited use. For ease of use, there are now many products available in screwdriver sets, including the vast majority of screwdriver styles and specifications.
